twitter time!

After originally planning on exploring several social media platforms during my independent study, I quickly came to realize:

A) There is simply not enough time to sufficiently delve into all of the intended platforms

B) Twitter is the king of contemporary social media

C) It would be in my best interest to dedicate more time to further explore Twitter so as to understand it’s value

D) How much I love making lists…so I will make another one

1. Twitter

So my focus for the last few weeks has been Twitter.

In researching Twitter I have clicked through and explored a variety of Twitter accounts ranging from individual use to company promotional use. After all of my exploring, I came across Joel Mark Witt’s post for Folk Media in which he summarizes my findings into the 7 reasons why Twitter is successful (here comes another list:)

1. Text based—information is easy to scan quickly

2. Short—140 characters forces people get to the point

3. Public—anyone can view which makes information unlimited

4. Social and informal—this has changed how we interact and approach communication, linking us all and making connections faster and easier

5. Current—conversations are always relevant and updated

6. Instant—news is shared and received immediately

7. Democratization of fame—“internet celebrity is now within everyone’s grasp”

As many unique aspects other social media platforms have to offer, Twitter remains applicable to everyone for these seven reasons. As the “dominant democracy of the social-sharing economy,” if your organization isn’t using Twitter…my research suggests you reconsider.
